Sophie Auger is an interdisciplinary artist, designer, and visiting professor at the UQAM School of Design.
She works across video installation, hybrid publishing, photography, and circuit bending.
Her research focuses on the beliefs and superstitions generated by digital technologies, and on how their invisible systems shape the ways we see, interpret, and inhabit the world.

Introduction to Unknown Art Index , by Juliette Bernatchez:
The proposition of Unknown Art Index supports the ambivalent yet necessary reception of unknown artists and their colossal collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. If their presence in the collection grants them legitimacy from the outset, it goes without saying that their status as unknown places them in a subordinate position. Indeed, at a time when men defined what was to be called Art, unknown artists advocated a radical approach that questioned the very status of the artist. This radicality attests to their place within a political and cultural avant-garde, perhaps going hand in hand with a questioning of identity validated through the need for anonymity. Victims of the centuries they have traversed, unknown artists embody, in their own way, the artistic ferment of these pivotal periods.
This catalogue inscribes the existence of these unknowns into a myth that has shaped the evolution of their art since 3000 BC. Ghostly, yet we seem to have all encountered them; in a prestigious museum as much as on a roadside billboard. Their dispersed intelligence fascinates, and their eclecticism seems too coherent to have been learned; this is why unknown artists deserve their place in art history.
No works by unknown artists can be found in the Metropolitan Museum’s collection after 1962.
